The portal and NIL have ruined college basketball. It's all a money grab now. Just hope we can build a decent team from the ground up next season. College basketball
is really semi-pro ball as it is currently constructed. I am from the Jimmy Walker, Ernie D. era when players would stay with one team and develop throughout their college career. Loyalty to a college program no longer exists. Sad. The consensus among analysts is that Bryan Hodgson of South Florida would be our best bet for a new coach. Aparently if he decides to leave His current position it would be between PC and Syracuse. Go Friars!
Buddy Cianci spoke at my graduation in ‘99. That would be unfathomable in any other city in the US besides maybe Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC in the 90s and Kansas City in the 1930s.
I travel all the time for work and go basketball and football games all over the country. Lots of places have a particularly strong local color to the fan base—particularly when the D1 school is the unrivaled big entertainment provider and defacto pro team for the town. Big Schools and small. Creighton/omaha, Michigan/Ann Arbor, Gonzaga, etc. I’m on a flight back from Provo, Utah as I write this. Providence is not unique here, (although many of its fans think it is and that’s part of the charm of it all). But there is an intensity and a certain homogeneity to a big chunk of its fans that is not for the feint of heart.
Case in point not a lot of fanbases whip out a “F this coach” twice in a week for two different coaches they consider to be their own. So yea, you need the right type of coach, and at this point I think that mostly means one who will win about 20 games next season.
Cultural adjustment and have to experience to believe indeed. I’m not from Rhode Island. I grew up in NY and went to PC in the late 90’s. A Dominican Priest told me that it might take some time to adjust, not being a local and all. Boy did it ever. If you aren’t from that area - holy cow and buckle up.
Yeah, but the vast majority of coaches, with the exception of Herb Sendek, don't have any ties to PC or to the state of Rhode Island. Whoever comes in as the new coach will have to understand what he's getting into; not only a program with a respectable amount of NIL/portal dollars, but a rabid, passionate fan base.

Phil Martelli Jr has RI ties, he coached at Bryant.

I completely agree.
