Providence Will Return to Mohegan Sun, and Play Miami, in the Hall Of Fame Tip Off in November

As the Providence Athletic Department announced on Tuesday, the Friars are set to play Miami on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Mohegan Sun in the Hall of Fame Tip Off. The winner will take on either Maryland or St. Louis in the title game on Sunday, Nov. 20, while the losers will play in a consolation game.

Providence hasn’t played Miami since Kris Dunn put on a show at the Barclay’s Center in PC’s 76-62 victory on Dec. 22, 2014. That game served as a coming out party for Dunn, and catapulted him into stardom.

Miami is fresh off of an Elite Eight run in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, falling to the same Kansas team that knocked out Providence in the Sweet 16. They are led by Jim Larranaga, who graduated from PC in 1971 and is part of the Friar hall of fame.

The most recent times Providence met either St. Louis or Maryland also came at neutral sites. The Friars drilled St. Louis, 90-63, in the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 17, 2017 behind a blazing-hot shooting night from long distance. The Friars made 9-10 from 3-point range that night. That win marked the first time PC and St. Louis had met since 1963.

The Friars and Maryland have a long history, dating back to the 1973 NCAA Tournament when PC picked up a 103-89 win over a talented Maryland club. Ernie DiGregorio scored 30 points that night, while Marvin Barnes finished with 19 points and 15 boards.

The most recent matchup came in November of 2013, when Maryland pulled out a 56-52 victory in the finals of the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands. Bryce Cotton led all scores in that game with 19 points.

Maryland will be led next season by former Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard.

This will mark the third time Providence has taken part in the Hall of Fame Tipoff at Mohegan Sun. In 2014, we saw LaDontae Henton going off for 38 points in a 75-74 win over Pat Connaughton and Notre Dame, a day after PC blitzed Florida State, 80-54.

The Friars split a pair of games at Mohegan in 2018, knocking off Justin Minaya and South Carolina, 76-67, before falling to Michigan in the championship game. That was a very good Michigan team led by Ignas Brazdeikis, Charles Matthews, and Jordan Poole.
